Although the warning itself is verbal, it is recommended to provide a written record of the verbal warning to verify that it occurred and the details of the warning and the agreed outcomes.   A copy of the verbal warning should be kept on the employees file.  

The verbal warning is usually the first stage in the employee disciplinary process.
